Greenwood, Delaware Greenwood, Delaware - Sussex County Population 837 (2000 census) Downtown is under one square mile. History of Greenwood, Delaware Nanticoke Indianas lived along the Nanticoke River The Lenape (Delaware) Indians lived along the banks of the Delaware River. [1610] Dutch explorer Samuel Argall named the state after his governor Lord De La Warr [1631] Lewis, Delaware was settled by Dutch colonists. Log cabins were first used in North American [1750] Most Indians had already migrated out of Delaware. [1775] Sussex County established. [1777] Battle of Coochs Bridge-British invade and won. [1787] Delaware was the first to ratify US Constitution. [1818] All land east of the Mississippi River was surrendered by the Delaware Indians and they moved on to Missouri > Kansas > Oklahoma. [1861-5] Civil War: Though Delaware officially fought for the Union, Sussex County loyalties were devided. [1909] Delaware's 55th Governor, Simeon Selby Pennewill was born near Greenwood, Delaware. He was a Republican. Methodist farmer. Delaware, the second smallest state, is primarily made up of Atlantic Costal Plains. About 200,000 companies are incorporated in Delaware.
